Description
A visit to the Monastery of Mega Spilaio and then a visit to a nearby village, perhaps in Kato Zachlorou.

The monastery is located in a large cave in a sheer cliff, where the western slopes of Mount Chelmos drop down to the gorge of the Vouraikos river, some 11 kilometres northwest of the town of Kalavryta. The monastery, which is considered the oldest in Greece, was built in 362 AD by the monk brothers Symeon and Theodore from Thessaloniki.

The monastery had a crucial role in the uprisings against the Turks. During the Revolution of 1821 the Monastery was a beacon of Hellenism but also a center of resistance against the conquerors and although it was attacked many times, it was never conquered.

The film was shot by A. G. Bonar during his tour of the Peloponnese in July 1966.
