Description
Nice general views of the decorated Omonoia Square with people gathered to watch the wedding procession of the heir to the Spanish throne Juan Carlos and Princess Sophia of Greece. The procession of cars bearing the royal families and the royal carriage are accompanied by groups of soldiers on horses. After the procession has passed, the people slowly leave the Square.

The marriage of the Spanish Throne's successor Juan Carlos and Princess Sophia of Greece was performed both according to the Catholic and Orthodox doctrine in Athens on May 14, 1962. The Catholic marriage took place at the St. Dionysius Church.

The marriage has created a political confilct in Greece, as Queen Fredericka pressured the Prime Minister Konstantinos Karamanlis to provide a large sum from the state budget as dowry for her daughter. On February 19, 1962, the minister of finance Spyros Theotokis presented a draft bill to Parliament providing for a 9,000,000 GDR (approximately 2,500,000 USD) dowry free of tax and free to be converted into hard currency. The bill caused intense reaction from the Enosis Kentrou and EDA parties, as well as public demonstrations with the slogan "Dowry to education and not to Sophia".
